Twenty years before the Civil War of the United States, and before it was legal for such a Congregation to exist, the Sisters of the Holy Family were founded in
New Orleans, Louisiana by Henriette Delille,
a free woman of color.
Co-foundresses of this religious community of
African-American women were
Juliette Gaudin and Josephine Charles.

Welcome to our website, a lens which focuses on the pathways of our ministries and the journeys of our Sisters. These pathways are paved with love, mercy and compassion.

Since 1842, our Sisters have been the faces of love, mercy and compassion to the people of God in the United States, Belize, Central America; and Benin City, Nigeria; Africa. The Sisters have faithfully ministered in our schools, parishes, nursing home, prisons, and housing for the elderly.

Pope Francis has proclaimed this year as the “Jubilee Year of Mercy.” Just as he opened the door of mercy in Rome, the Sisters have always opened the door of mercy in their hearts to the poor, sick and the elderly.

We invite you to browse through the website, and learn of the works of the Sisters, people whose lives have been touched by them, projects, opportunities, contacts, and future endeavors.

In 2017, we will celebrate our 175th anniversary. Plans are being made for a yearlong celebration from Nov. 19, 2016 to Nov. 19, 2017. Come and join us as we thank God for giving us these many years of service to His people.

May God bestow His merciful blessings upon you.
